Six years of KIDS
published: Sunday | April 16, 2006

Members of Dance Theatre Expressionz in performance at the launch of Hilton Kingston hotel's sixth Annual K.I.D.S. Charity Events, held at the hotel on Knutsford Boulevard, New Kingston on Wednesday.

On June 25, golfers will be swinging their clubs in another Hilton Caribbean K.I.D.S. Charity Golf tournament.

K.I.D.S., which stands for Kindness In Donation and Services, is now in its sixth year and this year's edition was launched at the Hilton Kingston hotel last Wednesday. It was a colourful display - from the purple, red, yellow and green balloons to the K.I.D.S. logo created by other balloons. Some cool music by the Hilton kept the early guests entertained.

The tournament has attracted about 200 golfers per tournament and has raised over JA$13 million. Last year, the hotel renovated and rebuilt the Keep Illiteracy Down Stream (KIDS) Basic School (the similar acronym is purely ironic we're assured) in May Pen, Clarendon, which was destroyed by Hurricane Ivan.

SURPRISE

General Manager of the Hilton Kingston, Frank Rosheuvel, expressed surprise at the success of the event. He revealed that the hotel was hoping to raise in excess of US$75,000-$85,000 to aid another basic school still to be decided on.

"So many people have been asking for assistance," he admitted. He also announced plans for an art auction, the work produced by students islandwide.

To also help achieve the target sum, there are other people coming on board and lending their talents. Wen 'Black' Elise of Elise International Production will stage an arts showcase on May 7, entitled 'Lyrics and Laughter for Love', in aid of the KIDS Basic School. Guests at the launch got a glimpse of the performances from Jab Children and the Dance Theatre Expressionz groups.

To warm the hearts, guests saw a specially prepared video of the KIDS students giving thanks to their benefactors.
