VERE TECHNICAL stretched their lead atop the girls' standings while Wolmer's took over sole leadership of the boys' division heading into today's third and penultimate day of the VMBS/ISSA Boys and Girls Championships at the National Stadium.
The girls from Hayes, Clarendon, lead the female section with 62.5 points over Holmwood (35.5), St. Andrew High (30.5), Edwin Allen (30) and Immaculate (24).
Wolmer's, on 30 points, are ahead of Calabar (28.5), Jamaica College (27), Kingston College (26.5) and Munro (11).
Vere's charge was led by Jillisa Grant (5.98m) and Kimberly Williams (5.96m) who finished one-two in the girls' Class Two long jump, which gave their team a 29-point lead. Edwin Allen's Francine Simpson (5.91m) and Holmwood's Salsa Slack (5.83m) were third and fourth.
BIG IN SHOT PUT
They also came up big in the shot put Open as, although Alpha's Jerrine Foster (12.18m) won, Kenisha Throughsingh (11.90m) and Kimoya Harriott (11.89m) pocketed second and third for Vere. Holmwood's Deborah Rose was fourth with a throw of 11.79m.
Wolmer's Dwight Webley won the boys' heptathlon Open with 4,852 points to collect 12 points and push his team from fourth to first at the end of the day.
Calabar's second-place position was due to Javon Hardware's record-breaking feat of 1.96m, which gave him the boys' Class Three high jump. Holy Trinity's Carey Gordon was second with a leap of 1.93m.
OVERWHELMED
The 14-year-old Hardware was elated with his achievement. "I am overwhelmed, it was a tough competition. I was expecting a fight from Kemarki Absolam of St. George's College," he said.
Absolam was fourth with a leap of 1.80m. Jamaica College (JC), led by Sharif Small (49.04m) and Ramone Berch (47.42m), picked up one-two in the boys' Class One discus. KC's Keiton Wilson (46.23m) was third while Bridgeport's Raymond Brown (43.74) finished fourth.
In the day's first final, Misha-Gay DaCosta of Immaculate leapt 1.71m for victory. St. Andrew High's Kathie-Lee Laidley (1.68m) and Immaculate's Pia Phillips (1.68m) finished second and third respectively.
Oreita Powell took the girls' long jump Class Four with a leap of 5.34m. Avanne Hammond of Wolmer's (5.17m) and Janiel McDonald of Alpha (5.09m) were second and third.
