THE MAN who was charged jointly with 48-year-old Matthews
Lane resident Donald 'Zekes' Phipps for a double murder, was freed yesterday
at the end of the Crown's case.
Garfield Williams, 32, farmer, of eastern Kingston, was freed after the Crown offered no further evidence against him.
Senior Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Paula Llewellyn said the charges against Williams were not established by the evidence
presented.
Defence lawyer George Soutar, who represented Williams,
said he agreed with Llewellyn.
Justice Horace Marsh then directed the jury to return a formal verdict of not guilty.
TRIAL TO RESUME MONDAY
Phipps is expected to give his defence when the trial resumes on Monday in the Home Circuit Court. The Crown called 35 witnesses at the trial which began on March 6.
Phipps and Williams were charged jointly with the murder of Leroy Rodney Farquharson and Dayton Williams, of Bayshore Park, eastern Kingston.
The bodies of the two men were found in an open lot in Rose Town, near Matthews Lane, downtown Kingston, on April 15 last year. The bodies were badly burnt and had gunshot wounds to the head.
