What artistes think? - Keep schools open during cricket
published: Tuesday | February 21, 2006

COCO TEA

'If nuff people did educated then nuff a di thing dem wey a gwaan inna di society now wouldn't a gwaan.'

- Coco Tea

WHAT ARTISTES Think looks at current societal issues and asks an artiste to give his/her opinion on that issue. It is social awareness from the perspective of those who are sometimes held responsible, appropriately or not, for highlighting and contributing to the attitude of the society.

This week's edition focuses on the decision to close schools within close proximity to Sabina Park during the staging of next year's Cricket World Cup. Sabina Park will be in use between March 13 and 24, 2007.

The schools affected are Jessie Ripoll Primary School, Holy Trinity High School, St. George's College, Kingston College, Convent of Mercy (Alpha Academy), Alpha Infant and Alpha Primary schools and Mico Teachers' College.

DON'T JEOPARDISE CHILDREN'S EDUCATION

Veteran singer Coco Tea gives his opinion on this decision.

"I don't think nothing can worth we doing anything to jeopardise the children's education.

Mi nuh say we nuh need the spin-offs of the Cricket World Cup and the extra revenue, but nothing fi come inna di way of education," he said.

"If you can find alternatives, if you can keep the thing and facilitate the children going to school, then that would be good, 'cause when the cricket done and gone, the youth dem still a goh dey yah," Coco Tea added.
