Roach fires West Indies youths to massive win
published: Thursday | February 2, 2006

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (CMC):

FAST BOWLER Kemar Roach grabbed a hat-trick and four West Indies batsmen got half centuries as the regional Under-19s beat Sri Lanka by 87 runs in a warm-up, limited overs game in preparation for the Youth World Cup yesterday.

Roach grabbed the wickets of Dilhan Cooray (23), Prabudha Perera (12) and Sachith Pathirana (0) in successive deliveries as the hosts limped to 206 all out in 39.1 overs, in reply to West Indies' 293 for six off 50 overs.

The feat saw Sri Lanka collapse from a position of 146 for six to 146 for nine, effectively ending the contest.

Leg-spinner Shamarh Brooks also grabbed three for 60 to sustain his excellent form on the tour.

Captain Angelo Matthews scored 61 to lead Sri Lanka before he became the first of Roach's four victims.

Earlier, William Perkins, Kieron Pollard, Richard Ramdeen, and Leon Johnson all got half centuries as they put the Sri Lankan bowling to the sword after West Indies won the toss and chose to bat first.

Perkins hit 53 from 58 balls with six fours and added 90 for the first wicket with Ramdeen, whose 52 needed 59 balls and included seven fours and one six.

Captain Leon Johnson continued his good form with a timely 51 form 63 balls before he was run out, as the innings slipped to 190 for five. But Pollard, with an unbeaten 53 from 45 balls, and Brooks, who cracked a 38-ball 41, rallied the lower order with a sixth wicket stand of 78.
