Cellphone use while driving
published: Thursday | January 19, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

IT IS interesting to note that there have been at least three letters/articles recently in your newspaper on the prevalence of cellphones in our society and their excessive use. I write however to endorse the call for legislation governing the use of cellphones while driving. This is a very disturbing trend, especially when it involves bus drivers who not only put themselves at risk, but the hundreds of persons whose lives are entrusted to them on a daily basis.

I recall some debate about two years ago with regard to the enactment of legislation to discourage this practice, but unfortunately, as is the case with many other important matters, it is a nine-day wonder and then nothing happens. I hope Asst. Commissioner Keith Gardner will bring this matter to the attention of our senior legislators so that it can be given the serious attention it deserves.

I am, etc.,

KAREN HENRY
