THE EDITOR, Sir:
DR. PETER Phillips is one of the main contenders and a favourite to replace Prime Minister Patterson. Dr. Phillips promised to provide "more jobs and wealth for all, put in place a first-rate education system and stamp out criminal activities."
If he has such bright ideas, why wait until he is elected to help reduce the number of us who have to migrate to gain suitable employment? Why wait until you are elected to help your sister (Maxine Henry-Wilson) restore a failing education system? Jamaica's justice system falls under his portfolio, but based on his promise, it would seem like he has to be the president before he can stamp out criminal activities.
FLIPPING THE SCRIPT
On the other hand, Portia Simpson Miller is basically flipping the script and highlighting areas where her main rival is failing miserably. She promised to make law and order as well as a properly functioning justice system her priority. However, her brother (Dr. Phillips) has been struggling for years to come up with the right strategies to curtail crime in Jamaica, so why withhold 'the bright ideas?'
The questions that those candidates need to answer are: 1. Based on their promises, what was preventing them from sharing and having their 'bright ideas' put in place? 2. If elected, how do they plan to implement their 'bright ideas?'
I am, etc.,
