Ganja find, stolen generators recovered in MoBay raid
published: Sunday | December 11, 2005

WESTERN BUREAU:

A Montego Bay man was detained in connection with the seizure of 20 bales of compressed ganja and a stolen Digicel generator which were recovered during a police operation in the upscale neighbourhood of Irwindale in St. James, yesterday.

"We went to the premises where we found one generator and 20 bales containing about 1,000 pounds of compressed vegetable matter resembling ganja," ex-plained Sergeant Elvis Malcolm.

"As a result of this, Richard 'Swaggy' Clarke was arrested and charged with possession of, dealing in and taking steps to export ganja."

According to Sergeant Mal-colm, the generator is the second one to be recovered within a 48-hour window.

"On Friday at about 5: 30 p.m. we got some information about some stolen digicel generators," he said. " We went to a premises at Salt Spring in St. James where we found a generator. Ian Rhodes was held for questioning as a result."

This brings to about five the number of generators recovered since the discovery of a generator-stealing ring earlier this year.

Recently, the police reported that between September and July this year, a total of 15 generators, valued at some $12 million, were stolen from various cell sites belonging to Cable and Wireless and Digicel.
