More Haitians arrive in Portland
published: Monday | December 5, 2005

Gareth Davis, Gleaner Writer

A GROUP of 35 Haitians landed in Hectors River, Portland, last Wednesday, bringing the number of arrivals in the island during the past four weeks to 74.

The group that arrived in a 20-foot sailboat is made up of 26 adult males, seven females and two children, a nine-year-old boy and a five-year-old girl. The Haitians landed around 5:35 a.m. on Wednesday. They had reportedly set out from Haiti late Sunday night.

Inspector Wilfred Penn of the Port Antonio police said that the Haitians were in good health and that the authorities were on top of the situation.

HOUSING

"The men were housed at the Port Antonio Station lock up, while the women were being housed at the Castle Police Station in cells. All of them were transferred on Friday to Kingston."

On November 20, 21 Haitians landed in Manchioneal, Portland, and have since been transferred to the Horizon Remand Centre in Kingston.
