Boys' Town stun Tivoli
published: Thursday | December 1, 2005

Howard Walker, Staff Reporter

BOYS' TOWN finally got the better of Tivoli Gardens, 6-5 on penalties, knocking out last year's beaten finalists in their Western Union/KSAFA Jackie Bell Knockout quarter-final yesterday at the Edward Seaga Stadium.

In an exciting and dramatic encounter, the game ended 2-2 after normal and extra time and was decided by the dreaded penalty shoot-out.

Boys' Town, in their third meeting of the season with Tivoli, finally got sweet revenge for two earlier defeats.

Boys' Town opened the scoring in the 50th minute courtesy of their skipper, Fitzroy "Piler" Anglin, who rose above Dwight Heron to head home a Michael Campbell leftside cross.

EQUALISED

But Orane Simpson equalised from the spot in the 80th minute after striker Christopher Nicholas was brought down by the goalkeeper, Philmore Crumbie, in the box.

The hard-working Andre Wheeler latched on to a Garfield Gillespie defence splitting pass and outsped Dwight Heron to once again give Boys' Town the lead in the 85th minute.

But three minutes later, Heron made amends by slotting home from a melee to redeem himself and send the game into extra time.

Heron then got into an altercation with Michael Campbell and both were red carded with a bloodied Campbell leaving the field the worse off.

After 30 minutes of extra time, the scores was unchanged and the match headed into the nail-biting penalty kicks.

Fabian Watkins, Wheeler, Wavel Williams, Garfield Rennicks, Jermaine Bailey and Colin Oldham scored for Boys' Town.

Christopher Nicholas, Orane Simpson, Christopher Jackson, Craig Stewart and Roland Dean were successful for Tivoli but the same couldn't be said for Victor Thompson who saw his shot well held by the tall Crumbie.

Winning coach Andrew Price was happy that his team finally got the better of their arch rivals. "It was very competitive. We played Tivoli twice this season. We know what we had to do coming here to Railway," Price said.

WEATHERED THE STORM

"We weathered the storm for the first half and wrested the initiative in the second half, but they equalised on two occasions because of a lack of concentration," he said.

"What I must commend is the spirit that this game was played. It was good natured, the crowd was very good. The opposing players were talking to each other and this is good for football," he said.

Meanwhile, Tivoli's manager, Brian Rose, said the team that wanted victory the most got it. "Boys' Town came out determined that they wanted it and achieved what they wanted," Rose said.

"It was a thrilling and exciting game. Both teams went out there and put on a good performance but in the end Boys' Town came out victorious. Congratulations to them," he said.
