TWO OF slain police officer Lascelles Walsh's children are the beneficiaries of a gesture by construction company, Halicon Holdings Limited, which will pay for the duration of their education at their respective schools.
Kit Kennedy, general manager at Halicon, presented the first cheque worth $160,000 on Monday at the Police Commissioner's office in St. Andrew. Accepting were 12-year-old LaDonya Walsh, who attends St. Andrew High School, and eight-year-old Doniel Walsh, a student at Vaz Preparatory.
Mr. Kennedy said his company, which is based in Kingston, approached the Jamaica Con-stabulary Force (JCF) with the initiative in May, just days after Inspector Walsh was murdered by gunmen on Port Royal Street on the morning of May 9.
"We hope this will be a long-term fund and we implore other companies to help kids in a similar predicament," Mr. Kennedy said.
Also in attendance were Police Commissioner Lucius Thomas, Inspector Walsh's widow, Donna, and his two-year-old son DaCosta.
Inspector Walsh was a member of the JCF's Motorised Patrol Division. He was one of three policemen killed in a nine-hour span on the evening of May 4 and the morning of May 5.
Corporal Hewitt Chandler was killed at the intersection of West King's House and Waterloo roads on the evening of May 4 by two men on a motorcycle. His killers were eventually shot dead by a police party who were in the area.
Canute Brown, a district constable, was the other member of the JCF murdered. He was killed by gunmen who attacked the Cross Roads Police Station where he was stationed.
