Lawmen on bribery rap
published: Wednesday | November 30, 2005

WESTERN BUREAU:

TWO POLICEMEN in the 'Second City' are facing charges of corruption and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

In the latest incident, a constable was nabbed in a sting operation in Montego Bay, St. James, on Monday. The identity of the policeman, who is attached to the Area One Police Flying Squad, is being withheld.

ACCUSED MAN PAID HALF

Allegations are that the constable was handling a wounding case and masterminded a plan to have the complainant drop the charges at a cost of $10,000. It is said that the accused man paid half of the sum and became wary after his accuser still attended court hearings.

The constable is in custody pending completion of the file and a subsequent ruling from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The police have refused to comment on the second incident, in which a constable has been implicated on bribery charges.

However, The Gleaner has learnt that the policeman allegedly accepted $8,000 in exchange for the return of a quantity of ganja to a peddler, who he had arrested.

"The matter is still under investigation and I wouldn't want to comment further on it until it has been completed," said Superintendent Warren Clarke, commanding officer for St. James.
