AT LEAST one major road in St. Mary remains impassable following heavy rains on the weekend.

According to disaster coordinator for St. Mary, Myrnel Grant, a section of the main road between Port Maria and Annotto Bay collapsed in White Hall on Friday, forcing the closure of the major thoroughfare.

Ms. Grant said that, as a result, motorists traveling from Port Maria to Kingston and Annotto Bay have been using the longer route through Highgate.

She added, however, that the majority of the other roads affected by either flooding or landslides had been reopened to vehicular traffic.

Among the communities that experienced severe flooding was Haywood Hall.

There was flooding in the town of Port Maria and the nearby community of Pagee while a retaining wall collapsed at the Martin Primary School.

In the meantime, Mayor of St. Port Maria, Bobby Montague, said an assessment of the damage sustained on the weekend is being carried out.
