Wadadah, Reno battle to draw
published: Thursday | October 13, 2005

Adrian Frater, News Editor

WESTERN BUREAU:

IN A game in which both teams squandered numerous goal-scoring opportunities, western teams Wadadah and Reno battled to a 0-0 draw in the first game of last night's Wray & Nephew National Premier League rescheduled doubleheader at Jarrett Park.

By virtue of the point they took from the game, Wadadah, now on five points, remain rooted in the bottom half of the standing while Reno are in mid-table, moving up to nine points.

Following the game, Reno coach Bradley Stewart seemed reasonably satisfied with the result, contending that any points garnered on the road must be good based on the competitive nature of the 12-team league.

"We can live with a point on the road and what we need to do now is to win our home games and we should be okay," said Stewart, who recently joined the Reno coaching staff. "I thought we played reasonably well today and with a little better finishing we could well have taken full points."

Wadadah's coach, Anthony 'Follies' Williams, was quite disappointed, blaming his team's poor finishing for its failure to beat Reno. He hinted at the end of the game that he will be looking outside of the current squad to come up with one or two quality strikers.

MISSING SHOTS

"If you don't score goals you are not going to win and we just keep missing these easy chances game after game," said Williams. "We will have to go out and recruit new players in the hope that we will start getting some goals."

Reno had the better of the early action and should have taken the lead in the 15th minute. Andre Jarrett caught the Wadadah defence napping but his low shot from close range flew wide of the left upright.

Midway through the half Wadadah wrested control and just missed taking the lead in the 27th minute. Striker Jermaine Anderson pounced on a superb pass from Daniel Ricketts but his shot was driven wide of the goal.

In the second half, Reno missed two glorious chances in the 70th and 74th minutes. First, Mario Harrison just failed to get his header on target and then Normam Wollery split the Wadadah defence with a neat dribble but fired wide of the goal.

In the 88th minute, Wadadah missed the easiest of chances to bury Reno.

Ricketts picked out substitute Omar Clarke with a perfect cross but, after controlling the ball elegantly, he lobbed his shot wide of the goal.

On the stroke of full-time, Wadadah missed another chance when Ricketts won possession in a goal-mouth melee but his close-range grounder rolled inches wide of the Reno goal.

GOALSHEET

Wadadah 0, Reno 0
