St Mary Parish Council to sue drain blockers
published: Tuesday | July 19, 2005

Nicholas Richards, Gleaner Writer

MONTAQUE

THE ST. Mary Parish Council is planning to take legal action against at least five 'prominent' citizens for allegedly blocking drains and gullies which caused flooding during the rampage by hurricanes 'Emily' and 'Dennis'.

"These findings will be tabulated and sent to the courts so that we can take the necessary legal actions against these perpetrators," St. Mary Mayor Bobby Montaque told The Gleaner yesterday.

SAND, CEMENT IN DRAINS

Some of the areas which incurred damage were Race Course, Frontier Heights, Annotto Bay, Cargill Lane, and Beenie Gully in Hampstead.

It is alleged that residents from these areas used debris, including boulders, to block the drains. The incidents were subsequently reported to the police who investigated the allegations.

"It was discovered that sand and cement were used to block drains in these sections of the parish which subsequently caused widespread flooding," the mayor added.
