The Bureau of Special Investigation has launched an enquiry into the death of Special Sergeant Lynden Hayden, who was killed by gunmen in St. Ann on June 15.
Mr. Hayden, 49, was attached to the Community Relations Division in Kingston.
The Constabulary Commun-ication Network's (CCN) Liaison Officer for St. Ann reports that about 3:00 p.m. on June 15, Mr. Hayden and
colleagues were on patrol when on reaching Mammee Bay, they were stopped by a man who reported that he had been robbed by a man armed with a gun.
The alleged robber was subsequently apprehended by one of the policemen but during an ensuing struggle, the policeman's gun went off, hitting Mr. Hayden in his right leg. The robber escaped while Mr. Hayden's colleagues tended to him. He was taken to the St. Ann's Bay Hospital where he was treated and released.
About 5:00 p.m. on Friday, Mr. Hayden reportedly complained of feeling pain in his injured leg. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
