Administrative ineptitude

THE EDITOR, Sir:
The Jamaica Teachers' Associa-tion's revelation that over 100 of their members who retired over a year ago are yet to receive any of the pension due to them, is
disgraceful. I strongly believe it has less to do with unavailability of funds and more to do with insensitivity and administrative ineptitude. This kind of unacceptable performance must be condemned and promptly addressed. Someone should be held accountable for this.
Certainly, with the technology that is available, there is no excuse for any tardiness in the presentation of accurate up-to-date records of every contributor to the pension fund. The trustees of that fund have a fiduciary responsibility for the investment and preservation of those funds. If the responsible people have been doing what they are supposed to do, then the
matter of availability of funds should not arise. The public should be told the truth.
This must be seen as a serious matter that demands extremely urgent attention. While we are at it, the position of all pensioners throughout the public sector should be examined to ensure that the injustice of protracted delays in payments of what is due to pensioners will not occur.
