WESTERN BUREAU:
CARNIVAL LOVERS came from all across western Jamaica to the Tropical Beach in Montego Bay on Saturday to 'soak up' the rhythms of Bryon Lee and the Dragonniares at the Supreme Ventures' Jamaica Carnival's 'Short Shorts Beach Bash'.
Despite a delay in the start, the sounds of Bryon Lee and the Dragonnaires quickly vanished any lingering frustration and singer Oscar B along with Jumo and Ashley pumped up the energy of the crowd. They started their set with a workout segment consisting of instructions for movements to the latest dance crazes done to soca beats.
But about half an hour into their act, there was a glitch with the public address system. During the unplanned intermission, Pieces Disco did some musical juggling to entertain the revved up party-goers.
Following the delay which lasted approximately 15 minutes, Oscar and the band returned to the stage, with even more energy and went into their repertoire of hits. They had a willing crowd, that carried out every instruction as they frolicked on the seafront venue.
Then came the second malfunction with the PA system. This time however the engineers had the problem corrected in approximately 10 minutes and patrons were soon gathered around the stage for more soca music.
FEVER PITCH
This time around they were treated to songs like Get The Cat, It's Carnival, Dollar Wine and Turn Me On. This brought the party to a fever pitch level and the cold air could not chill the spirit of the patrons
As if this was not enough, Jumo went on to do a solo piece during which he teased the women by showing off his 'wire waist'. The women screamed and crowded to the front of the stage to view his actions. Those who dared to touch him did and faces lit up in gleeful appreciation.
This segment was followed by a 10-minute break and Pieces with its selector, Corey, ably maintained the hype of the crowd with reggae hits from the new age Rastafarian singers such as Jah Cure, Fanton Mojah and Natty King.
On resumption of the Bryon Lee and the Dragoniares stint, Jerry D gave away prizes from some of the carnival's sponsors and directed the 'Tiney Winey Diva' competition. But not before Ashley called the 'service' in order with her version of Marvia Providence's - Hear My Cry.
The 'saints' had a 'whale of a time' in the wee hours of Sunday morning as they lifted hands high in praise before Oscar took back control and continued the entertainment with songs from the band.
