KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC:FRONTRUNNERS JAMAICA positioned themselves to extend their lead in the Carib Beer Series as Guyana's batting line-up crumbled on the third day of their fourth-round match at Kensington Park yesterday.
Responding to Jamaica's formidable 410 for six declared, Guyana were dismissed for a paltry 191 in their first innings and batting again after the hosts imposed the follow on, were reeling at 77 for five at the close.
Guyana still require another 132 runs, with five wickets remaining, to make Jamaica bat again.
Resuming at 13 without loss, Guyana lost wickets steadily and required Narsingh Deonarine with a patient 45, and a lower order rally from the Nagamootoo brothers, Mahendra (36) and Vishal (33), to bring respectability to the eventual total.
Fast bowler Daren Powell was one of the destroyers, taking three for 28 while left-arm spinner Nikita Miller grabbed three for 35. In fact, Guyana were in trouble early when Ryan Ramdass was caught behind for six off Powell, with just five added to their overnight score. His fellow opener Krishna Arjune followed soon afterward via the same route off pacer Dwight Washington for 10, and when Powell claimed Assad Fudadin for two to a catch at the wicket, Guyana had been reduced to 25 for three.
PARTNERSHIP
Deonarine and captain Damodar Daesrath then came together to stabilise the Guyana innings, adding 53 for the fourth wicket. All told, Deonarine batted
152 minutes and faced 102 balls in an innings that contained five fours and a six, while Daesrath's 14 spanned 99 minutes and came from 71 balls, with a solitary boundary.
When Powell prised out Daesrath to claim his third wicket, it triggered a clatter of wickets as Guyana lost four wickets for 26 runs three for 12 runs after the luncheon interval as they had gone to lunch at 92 for four.
Languishing at 104 for seven, the Nagamootoo brothers shared a 50-run, eighth wicket stand.
David Bernard Jr ended the partnership when he bowled Mahrendra with Guyana on 154 and Trevon Garraway aided Vishal in raising another 37 runs before both players fell with the score at 191 as Guyana were bowled out. Buoyed by a lead of 219, Jamaica had early success when Powell sent back Arjune for a first ball duck with the score on three.
And though Guyana recovered well to reach 61 for two, they lost three wickets for 16 runs late in the day, as Bernard claimed three wickets in his four overs to leave Guyana tottering on 77 for five.
Fudadin was unbeaten on 33 from 104 minutes and 67 balls, and had struck three sixes and a four.
