THE EDITOR, Sir:I see once again where the JLP is in contention, this time within the constituency of St. Elizabeth where the headline reads 'Chang pulls gun to ward off angry JLP supporters'.
I was reading a law book and came across a quote which immediately made me think of the JLP and their problems. I now give this quote with the hope that the JLP will learn something from it. Although it was a legal scholar by the name of Lawrence speaking about judges, I think the quote is applicable to the JLP in particular and any party in general.
The members "...should remember that their close tie in the long run represents mutual advantage and should have some sense of moral obligation toward each other. They are of the same political group or network: to cause one another irreparable harm would weaken their position against outsiders.
Second, other people likely to be interested in the dispute also belong to this political group or network. Relatively few in number and closely related to both parties, they do not split into two groups, one on each side, but are swayed by the same considerations as described above.
If, as sometimes happens, either litigant should lose restraint, they join forces to blanket the dispute and ensure an agreement as soon as they can."
It would be refreshing, for a change, to have two vibrant and competitive parties to choose from in the next general election.
I am, etc.,
