SHIPPING FROM Jamalco's port at Rocky Point in Clarendon has re-started after completion of repairs to the damaged facility, caused by Hurricane Ivan in September.
Alumina shipments from the 1.25 million tonne-per-year Jamalco refinery at Halse Hall in Clarendon were halted due to a temporary plant shutdown and significant damage to its Rocky Point port. Jamalco is a 50-50 joint venture between Alcoa and the Jamaican Government.
AHEAD OF SCHEDULE
The original estimate for a six-month completion was reviewed to allow for completion by November 6. But repairs were completed on October 28, ahead of schedule in the record time of six weeks.
Jamalco refinery manager Alberto Fabrini said quick repair job was critical for refinery operations, as the company was running low on storage space for the alumina that was produced and could not be shipped.
Jamalco's Rocky Point Port received significant damage to its docking and loading facilities during the passing of Hurricane Ivan.
The shipment of approximately 38,000 tones of alumina will be followed by an accelerated shipping schedule over the next few weeks for the alumina which has been produced and stored during the repairs.
