Mighty task ahead for Jamaica
published: Sunday | October 24, 2004

WIN OR get the next flight to Kingston that is the situation 'star-studded' Jamaica find themselves in today when they face hosts and defending champions Guyana in the final preliminary round regional one-day tournament match at Bourda Oval.

Gareth Breese, who leads a Jamaica team which includes Chris Gayle, Wavell Hinds, Marlon Samuels, himself, Carlton Baugh, David Bernard and Daren Powell, all with West Indies Test experience, said he was fully aware of the task ahead.

"We have to ensure that we win because that's the only way we will have to get a semi-final berth," Breese told The Sunday Gleaner in a telephone interview from his hotel in Guyana.

POSITIVE OUTLOOK

"I think all the guys are very positive as we had a good win yesterday (Friday against Barbados) and it was a great team effort. We just have to make sure we show that same character tomorrow (today) and hopefully we will finish in the final four," Breese said.

Last year's beaten finalists Barbados (15 points) and surprise team the Windward Islands (14 points) have already booked their semi-final spots. Both teams secured their places yesterday, Barbados by beating Guyana by 80 runs and Windward Islands for carving out their second nail-biting victory a one-run win over Trinidad & Tobago.

Trinidad, who also face a do-or-die match-up against bottom of the table Leeward Islands (four points) at Uitvlugt today, Jamaica and Guyana all have eight points. This mean that although the Leewards have four points, all four teams are in with a chance of making the semi-finals as victories for the Leewards against Trinidad and Jamaica over Guyana could see them going through.

SEMI-FINALS

The semis bowl off on Thursday in Barbados.

Jamaica has so far banked on spinners this tournament but against Guyana in Guyana, things may be different today but Breese believes to win "we will have to bat Guyana out of the game".

The captain also said he is aware of what to expect from the Shivnarine Chanderpaul-led team. Breese said they have played against a "few of these (Guyanese), so we have quite a bit of knowledge about some of them. We do know most of the players".

Jamaica have performed way below expectations so far. The bowlers have lacked the killer instinct especially when it comes down to the opponents' tailenders.

"I wouldn't say we lack the killer instinct, but we haven't being completing the job," Breese countered.

"We proved yesterday (Friday against Barbados) that we are capable of completing the job. Yes, it was a little bit too late because we had teams on the run and should have probably done it before, but I am just happy we are starting to get it done," he said.
