Jack Sparrow for Cash Pot feature
published: Saturday | October 9, 2004

Winston Griffiths... rides Jack Sparrow.

Orville Clarke, Freelance Writer

IT'S SUPREME Ventures/Cash Pot Day at Caymanas Park, the well-supported 11-race programme featuring race No. 1 in the Cash Pot 'Only One For Me'/TOBA Yearling Sales Series for native bred maiden two-year-olds over 1200 metres.

Sponsors Supreme Ventures Limited has donated $750,000 for the three-race series confined to maiden two-year-olds. Of the 11 declared to run, nine were purchased at last November's Thoroughbred Yearling Sales in the Official Car Park at Caymanas Park and are thus eligible to win the major share of the $565,000 purse for each race.

The two not purchased in the Yearling Sale - SYMBOL OF HOPE and HIGH GRADE - will go for the lion's share of a downgraded purse (minus bonus) of $365,000.

CTL MEDIA AWARDS

The day will also feature the CTL Media Awards for the first time in three years. Six awards will be presented in six categories, including newspaper, radio, television, photography and magazine programmes. Tops will be the Legal Light Award to the oustanding media personality which was won by The Gleaner when the awards were presented for the first time in 2001.

Meanwhile, the Cash Pot/TOBA Yearling series for two-year-olds should resolve itself into a straight fight between JACK BE GOOD from the stables of champion trainer Wayne DaCosta and the well-forward debutante JACK SPARROW who is conditioned by leading trainer Philip Feanny.

JACK BE GOOD, to be ridden by champion jockey Trevor Simpson, has shown good ability in two starts, the more recent on September 29 when finishing three lengths second to ESTOY LISTO in a fast run (1:00.3) round five maiden race in which he led to the last furlong.

GOOD PROSPECT

Prior to that the son of Pat N'Jack out of the 1999 Derby and Oaks winner Good Prospect finished 4 1/2 lengths third to CHARRITO over 1100 metres after suffering interference at the start.

Having moved sweetly at exercise, blazing three furlongs in 34.4 on Tuesday morning, JACK BE GOOD will be coming to run and could well open his account on this his third start.

JACK SPARROW, however, has looked above average in his preparation and this nice looking bay colt by Outrigger out of the Peacemaker mare Ruling Angel is fancied to make a winning debut.

JACK SPARROW galloped four furlongs in 48.4 easily on Tuesday morning in the company of stable-companion and 'Horse of The Year' A KING IS BORN, both finishing heads on in that work. He obviously has good speed and I suspect he could just be one of the better youngsters to be seen out so far this season.

Leading all-time jockey Winston Griffiths has the ride.

JACK SPARROW to win from JACK BE GOOD and LOVE TRIAL is my idea of the outcome.

Other firm fancies on the card are MEDICAL REPORT to stave off old rival SWEET SURVIVOR in the second race, THE MINISTER to upstage CAPTAIN BONE in the fifth race over 1800 metres for the Sir Walter Gilbey Memorial Cup, GO ON GO ON in the sixth and HIGHEST CREST over JUSTIFIED AWARD, FRENCH MINISTER and RAINBOW CHASER in the 11th and final in which the maximum 16 will run.
