Take back the cards, give cash instead
published: Wednesday | August 25, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I WAS an ardent viewer of Digicel's Rising Star Competition as were many of my fellow Jamaicans. This show I thought was a very good medium of displaying the many talents that we have here in Jamaica.

Apart from that, I was very disappointed in Mr. Anthony 'Killer' Miller and Digicel. Mr. Miller, in my opinion, has discouraged and trampled a lot of the contestants' self-esteem. It seemed as if he had a vendetta with some of them. At times he spoke the truth but sometimes went overboard with his comments.

As for the other two judges, A.J. Brown and Nadine Sutherland, hats of to both of you. The two of you were the high points of the competition, apart from the contestants. I think your encouragement was taken very seriously.

Now for Digicel, I had hoped that the contestants would have walked away with some cash instead $1.75 million in call credit. I know that if Digicel had given away cash, it would not even 'shake them' one bit. Please reconsider, take back the call credit and give them cash instead. Although they got a lot of exposure because of the competition, I think they deserved to get compensation for money spent on clothing and traveling.

Well, Digicel, I hope you do a better job next year.

Finally, big ups to Cavan and Renay. You go guys. I am really proud of you two.

I am, etc.,

YANIQUE SAMUELS
