THE EDITOR, Sir:
WHENEVER HORROR blares from the pulpit, I am convinced it's not always divine inspiration. The outburst of many preachers more closely resemble arrogance in ignorance and religious intolerance.
A well known preacher proudly tells the story of chasing a young woman out of church because she was, in his eyes, dressed in a 'skimpy' fashion and inviting rapists unto herself. It is not inconceivable that this young woman was a rape victim who had gone to the house of the Lord to seek comfort and consolation; instead she encountered outright condemnation and severe humiliation!
The naked truth is that beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder (not bare holder), but for the man not holding his spirit (not the holy spirit), it certainly lies in the eyes of the bleer, sorry, beer holder.
I believe a woman has the right to dress in a manner or fashion which she thinks makes her more beautiful or attractive. It does not take a hero to respect this right.
Let's give the devil his due and thank the bishop for highlighting an issue which is of major concern to many.
Redress in the form of an apology should be given to the young woman who was deemed 'skimpy', and to all Jamaican women.
I am, etc.,
