THE EDITOR, Sir:THE DEATH of the Most Honourable Hugh Lawson Shearer has ended an era of devoted service by a true patriot of Jamaica.
His contribution to the political life of Jamaica can be described as legendary. Many have spoken of his affability and his genuineness as a statesman. These are all fitting descriptions of one who was known to hold no grudges.
In these days of rampant corruption in our country and the suspicions of skulduggery among those who govern, the title of "Most Honourable" tend to ring hollow. But it is a term that can be used without hesitation to describe Mr. Shearer. He has earned the title through hard work and consummate dedication to and love for his country.
The best tribute we could pay to his memory is to seek to build a society of peace and goodwill which his life epitomised. He was a true example of humility and integrity, a peace builder extraordinaire. We hope that present and future leaders will seek to emulate these positive traits from his life. One fears that the significance of all this is already being lost in the present cycle of the pursuit of political power now taking place in both parties.
