Seek UN help to fight crime
published: Sunday | July 11, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

WHY DOESN'T the Government of Jamaica call for help from the United Nations to disarm the marauding murderers on the island?

I was born in London of Jamaican parents 46 years ago and have strong roots with the island, but am disgusted at the wanton and senseless slaughter that occurs daily. Even more distressing is the Government's pitiful response of launching endless crime initiatives which never make an iota of difference to the spiralling crime.

Enough! Admit you can't cope and seek foreign troops to assist before the island becomes one mass grave.

Last week in my South London church a Jamaican member of the congregation told us that her brother had been the third member of her family to be murdered in just three months in Portmore.

In January another member of the church had to return to Jamaica to bury her brother murdered in Clarendon and in May yet another church member's two nephews had been murdered. By the way our church represents people of all races, from over 20 different countries, yet Jamaicans are the only nationality to have members of their family routinely gunned down.

It's all very well for the Jamaican Government to bang on about getting more tourists, but take it from me many people in the United Kingdom will give Jamaica a wide berth for safer shores in the Caribbean, until the Government gets serious about ridding the island of serial killers.

I am, etc.,
