More employment opportunities for youth
published: Friday | June 11, 2004

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES for young people were bolstered yesterday with the signing of an agreement of co-operation between Digicel Jamaica Ltd., and the National Youth Service (NYS).

The signing, which took place at the Knutsford Court Hotel, will see Digicel providing the technical and monetary support for two of the training corps affiliated with the NYS.

The Early Childhood Education Corp. will receive a contribution of $3 million over the next three years while the Customer Service Corp. will benefit by way of jobs for its graduates.

David Hall, CEO of Digicel, noted that the NYS programmes were commendable as they were meeting the needs of the youth.

SLOW JOB MARKET

"It brings together young school leavers facing a slow job market, with an education system in urgent need of committed teaching personnel, to enhance and enrich the youngest children in the school system," he said.

Approximately 600 early childhood teacher aids and 300 customer service representatives are expected to be trained by the end of the year.

Digicel will also be providing the NYS with $3 million over the next three years specifically towards its training programme for the early childhood teacher aids.

The NYS was founded in 1973 by the Jamaican Government and provides various career opportunities for young Jamaicans between 17 and 24 years-old who have successfully completed high school and wish to access training, work experience or further their studies.

It offers career orientation in a number of fields facilitated through four main sectors education, cadet, social service and conservation.
