LETTER OF THE DAY - Surviving on loans?
published: Sunday | May 9, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

AS THE sole breadwinner in my family at this time, it would be very obvious to my wife and children that we are in a very serious financial crisis if I came home and announced that I had successfully negotiated another loan to pay our bills for the month. I am certain that my announcements would be met with concerns, especially from my wife, knowing that I had negotiated loans in the past so we could keep food on the table, light, water and other necessities going. My wife and I would have to talk about why I am always borrowing to pay our bills and how we are going to pay our lenders, especially at high interest rates.

I am very puzzled as to how announcements of securing loans by the Jamaican Government is met with applause and celebratory gestures by many people in high places. Do these people realise how desperate the economic climate looks when they jump and applaud on these announcements? You would think that with the Government depending on loans to fuel the Jamaican economy, it would raise concerns amongst our people, but people celebrate instead!

Could it be that the people who celebrate and applaud when these announcements are made, are the people who have their heads buried in the sand? Are the figures for the budget given out by Finance Minister Dr. Omar Davies, sinking into our craniums as yet? We cannot survive on borrowing, we have to start earning! Wake up Jamaica!

I am etc.,
