Hats off to mothers
published: Sunday | May 9, 2004

By Chester Francis-Jackson, Gleaner Writer

AND SO, today we celebrate mothers the world over, and how! Let's just say we give thanks for the life and bounties they have bestowed as we use this day to universally acknowledge their roles in shaping the future of this here fabulous planet!

And so, today we say an especially warm greeting in lauding our mothers, those present and those who have transitioned.

Felicitations to the 'Mother of the Nation', Lady Bustamante; former first ladies: Beverley Anderson-Manley and Mitsy Seaga; the wife of the Leader of the Opposition, Mrs. Carla Seaga; Jamaica's first lady of Tourism, Mrs. Aida Issa; Mrs. Blanche Blackwell; Mrs. Valerie Facey; Mrs. Marjorie Matalon; Mrs. Sereta Matalon; Mrs. Nelly Hendrickson; Mrs. Gloria Chen; Mrs. Doris Benjamin; Mrs. Maisie Chang; Mrs. Angela Melhado; Mrs. Sheila Hart; Ms. Angela King; and Mrs. Cedella Booker.

MOTHERS ALL

They are mothers all, who, through their parenting and support, have continued and continue to contribute to the development of this island state!

Happy Mother's Day to you all; and to mothers everywhere!

And speaking of 'Women of Substance', the absolutely charming Angela King, Jamaica's pioneering United Nations assistant secretary-general, retired from that post last week as, she said, 'To write my memoirs'.

To toast her service to the UN, however, last Thursday, the oh so elegant Ms. King was hosted to a farewell dinner party by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan at the UN's New York headquarters. It was quite a stellar occasion with over some 30 diplomats from the world community in attendance, to pay their respects to their outgoing colleague!

The buzz is it was one fabulous do and then some, with the honouree, looking her simply smashing self, as she graciously accepted the ring endorsements and praise of her peers, as she, just as graciously, exited the world of international diplomacy!

NADINE MISSED

And still speaking of women making a difference: Dears, the hot Ms. Nadine Willis, was markedly absent from a number of the European Fashion Showcase, that just ended in the fashion capitals of Europe. Nadine's electric personality makes her a hit when and wherever she struts the catwalk.

She is not at home however, slouching as the new daahling of international fashion is the hot new face of both the Rimmel and M.A.C. cosmetic lines a first for a woman of colour as prior to her inking this major deal, it was none other than fashion icon Kate Moss, who was the face of these cosmetic lines!

And as if to top a fabulous season, the buzzing Ms. Willis is the subject of one fine article for this here current issue of Air Jamaica's in-flight SkyWriting Magazine, and how!

Pumpkins, it is a must read and see for Fashionistas and fans of the colourful model, as she continue writing new chapters in her rags to runway story!
