Support for Bamboo Avenue
published: Tuesday | March 16, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I AM writing to lend support to the residents of Bamboo Avenue in their quest to stop the relocation of the United States Embassy to that area.

Taken in the context of Jamaica, that location is going to present a clear and present danger to the community and in addition create a traffic hazard such that Liguanea has never seen.

As an individual who is very familiar with the area, I know that there is very limited space to offer parking for embassy clientele. The provision of shuttles will not work in Jamaica as individuals will insist on driving themselves to this area.

Additionally the trend that we have seen is that US embassies are bullseye targets for attacks by terrorist groups and will most certainly create a higher level of danger for residents who have to live in the area.

The US Embassy is more than capable of finding a more suitable location for their embassy. One that will offer them the ability to secure the facility, provide adequate parking and also minimise the risks to residents.

I wonder if this had anything to do with the recent decision of the KSAC to change the designation of Bamboo Avenue to a gated community which created quite a conflict in the council.

I am, etc.,
