Ill-conceived gesture

THE EDITOR, Sir:
THE 10-WEEK visit of deposed Haitian president Jean Betrand-Aristide is an ill-conceived gesture of the government. Of what importance is Mr. Aristide's stay in Jamaica? Equally, how much will this stay cost the Jamaica taxpayers? The government has given no clear or acceptable enough reason for Mr. Aristide's welcome.
Jamaica with its worsening economic condition is not in a position to be playing the role of 'Santa Claus' to a political figure who failed to improve the social and economic well-being of his own people. Aristide's stay is an insult to the several Haitian refugees in Jamaica. To see the man, partially responsible for them fleeing their homeland being welcomed by the government adds to their pain and suffering.
Why did Mr. Aristide need a personal escort? And, what is the cost to the taxpayers for Sharon Hay-Webster and her entourage visit to Africa?
This is another attempt by the Patterson government to score political points. If Mr. Aristide wants to visit Jamaica, he should do so on his own, footing his own bill.
