Ja should send troops to Haiti
published: Saturday | March 6, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

ACCORDING TO the Miami Herald, Chile has promised about 300 army troops to be sent to Haiti for peacekeeping. Chile can send 300 soldiers to Haiti, but Jamaica, with 2500 Regular Force soldiers and 1000 Reserves, at least according to www.jdfmil.org/overview/background/background5.html, can't?

As an African man that is embarrassing and hurtful to me. I truly understand Jamaica's economic situation, but standing by to watch carnage is inexcusable.

Those troops that absolutely must remain in Jamaica on active patrol should stay, but Jamaica and CARICOM as a whole should send those troops who are not physically needed elsewhere to Haiti without delay.

African nations, particularly the Francophone ones, should be involved as well. It is time to stand up and take care of our own.

I am, etc.,
