Missed opportunity
published: Saturday | March 6, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

WITH THE recent development in Haiti, I was looking forward to the CARICOM to take a proactive stance, but instead they went begging at the UN and the United States.

CARICOM this was your moment to shine, this was the opportunity to show the world that you are capable of taking care of yourselves, and resolve issues when they arise. The outcome would have been different and I feel, more positive, if CARICOM had intervened, instead of having meetings and press conferences.

France and Canada left thousands of miles to get there to help and still the CARICOM was/is having meetings on whether or not to send troops. Well they don't need you anymore, it's being taken care of.

The CARICOM went to ask the UN for help and they helped the best way they can, rid themselves of the problem, resignation and exile, then put troops on the ground. They disarm the Rebels and pray for stability.

Now the CARICOM cries foul, because this was not what they wanted, (another meeting) and still nobody knows what they wanted, or if they wanted anything at all for Haiti.

I am, etc.,
