Eleven overseas Boyz for Uruguay friendly
published: Tuesday | February 10, 2004

ELEVEN overseas-based pros have been confirmed for Jamaica's senior football team for next Wednesday's international warm-up match against two-time World Cup winners Uruguay, at the National Stadium.

Of that number, seven are now engaged in league competitions with teams in various divisions across Britain.

They include Preston North End's Division One duo - central defender Claude Davis and enterprising striker Ricardo Fuller who has been making the headlines on a weekly basis through his brilliant play while scoring and providing assists.

Big striker Onandi Lowe, a regular on both the Reggae Boyz' and British scoring charts at second division Rushden and Diamonds, rank highly among the players on the confirmed list which also includes explosive midfielder Jermaine Johnson, who scored yesterday for Oldham.

Johnson has been loaned to Oldham from Premiership team Bolton Wanderers, with whom Jamaica's number one goalie Donovan Ricketts recently signed. Ricketts will be coming too, as is Rotherham's Darren Byfield and defensive strongman Ian Goodison, who is on loan from Tivoli Gardens at second division Tranmere Rovers.

The man with the goal passes from midfield, Andy Williams, along with defenders Tyrone Marshall and Craig Ziadie and forward Damani Ralph, a relatively new addition, play in the United States' Major League Soccer (MLS) championship.

Both Williams and Ralph play for Chicago Fire which made the championship final and Ralph won the Rookie of the Year award after his impressive scoring feats.

Uruguay are fielding a strong line-up with AC Milan's Alvaro Recoba and Manchester United's Diego Forlan as they look to maximise their game preparation for South American World Cup qualifiers, which continue later this month.

The Jamaicans are preparing towards a similar end - qualifying for the 2006 World Cup in Germany - and their series will start in June.
