Death of a child
published: Sunday | January 25, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I WRITE today with great pain in my heart as now another child has died and no doubt in all probability it could have been avoided. The fact that the authorities saw it in their wisdom to widen Constant Spring Road was good. However, if the pedestrian crossing was removed it should have been replaced.

There is a family today mourning the loss of a child and it is because our administrators failed to be proactive. Time and time again we have allowed situations to come to a boil before something is done. What is unfortunate though is the fact that when these things happen it is the poor and innocent that suffer. This must stop.

It is quite likely that had the Principal of Merl Grove High in conjunction with the P.T.A. acted irresponsibly by having the students blocking the road and demanding that the crossing be replaced the child might not have died.

They resisted and for that they did not receive "justice", while others who successfully block roads and burn tyres receive theirs. This is not right.

For the family of that child, the school, friends and all others affected by her death I mourn with you today and my prayers are with you.

I am, etc.,
