Jarrett, Berry to join JFF committee
published: Wednesday | December 17, 2003

By Paul A. Reid, Staff Reporter

WESTERN BUREAU:

NOTED BANKERS Earl Jarrett and Chris Berry are to be a part of the Jamaica Football Federation's (JFF) new Finance Committee, The Gleaner has learned.

The JFF is expected to name its committees, including three new ones and their chairmen, later this week or early next week. The three new committees to be formed are Youth Development, Women's Football and Infrastructure, JFF president Crenston Boxhill said last week.

Highly-placed sources have told The Gleaner however that Jarrett, the general manager of Jamaica National Building Society (JNBS), and Berry, chairman of the investment firm Mayberry Investments, along with Ian Neita, a senior vice-president of Cable and Wireless Jamaica (C&WJ), and Wayne Smith, the finance and planning manager of the CVM TV Group, are to sit on the influential Finance Committee.

A fifth member is to be named early in the new year and will also come from the financial sector.

The JFF announced this week that it has inherited a near $30 million deficit, including $14.9 million owed to former president, Captain Horace Burrell - the largest single creditor.

When contacted earlier this week, Boxhill declined to comment on the names of the members of the committees, saying they had yet to get confirmation from most of the people who were nominated.

He also said that the nominees had to be ratified by the executive and management committees of the JFF before they could be confirmed.

The Gleaner also understands that the chairmen of the four existing committees will not be reinstated.

Former first vice-president Raymond Anderson headed the Competitions Committee; former third vice-president David Watt was the chairman of the Disciplinary Committee; Allan Morrison was the chairman of the Finance Committee while Howard McIntosh was the chairman of the Technical Committee.

Boxhill announced this week that the three new vice-presidents would be given specific areas of responsibilities.

Second vice-president Linnell McLean will oversee the newly-formed Youth Development Committee; first vice-president George Evans will head the Marketing Committee while third vice-president Patrick Roberts will be in charge of special events.
