By Rayon Dyer, Gleaner WriterCOUNCILLOR FOR the Newmarket division in North West St. Elizabeth, Ernest Hendricks, said darkness has enveloped most of the streets in his division over the last couple of months as the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPSCo.) is yet to repair the defective street lights in the area.
Councillor Hendricks vented his anger over the JPSCo's tardiness in repairing the lights which are located at several key sections of the division. He was speaking at the monthly general meeting at the St. Elizabeth Parish Council in Black River last week.
"The Jamaica Public Service Company has been promising to repair the numerous defective street lamps in the Newmarket division for the longest while, however, nothing has been done," said Mr. Hendricks.
"It seems as if the Newmarket division is being penalised for some reason or another because, in districts such as Springfield, Maybole and Ginger Hill there are no street lights," Councillor Hendricks lamented.
Councillor Donovan Pagan, of the Braes River division, told the meeting that street lights were illegally removed from Pepper School and from along the Long Hill to Content Road in his division. He said he has asked the JPSCo to investigate the matter.
Michelle Bowes-Smith, manager of the JPSCo district office in Black River, said that the company is aware of the need to repair the street lights across the parish. She said, however, that all street lights cannot be fixed at the same time.
Mrs. Bowes-Smith also assured the councillors present at the meeting that the company was doing everything in its power to deal with the problem in every division.
