CITIZENS USING water from catchment tanks in St. Ann are expected to see improvement in the quality of water supply, following receipt of $112,068 from the Ministry of Local Government to install chlorinated device at one tank.
Superintendent of Roads and Works, George Hosang made the disclosure at the monthly meeting of the St. Ann Parish Council recently.
"We all know for a number of years, concern has been expressed on treatments. We were hoping to get funds from the Ministry for about four tanks as recommended by the Medical Officer of Health," Mr. Hosang said.
He noted that the funds received could only do work on one tank, so the council was looking at the Mt. Olivet or Abner Gras tanks.
Mr. Hosang pointed out that these tanks were gravity fed so care had to be taken on law that presently exist. We are hoping to conclude arrangements and start the project in January 2004. To improve the water quality, the Road and Works Department and the Ministry of Health recently initiated a workshop for caretakers of public tanks to enlighten them about upkeep and maintenance, especially in dispensing of chlorine, he announced.
Hosang stressed that the programme had to be continuous as, despite budgetary constraints, it was important that water of acceptable standard be distributed to citizens.
