THE EDITOR, Sir:
UNTIL INTEREST rates and taxation are reduced to economically defensive levels, production and employment will continue to evade us. It is obvious that Dr. Davies' best is not nearly good enough and he should be replaced forthwith if the country and the government is to survive.
Although he is to be respected as a person and as a Minister of Finance who has borne the weight of the meltdown in the financial sector very well, he cannot be seen as a minister under whose watch there has been economic growth, increased employment and increase in real income.
It is my thinking that if a minister does not succeed in these, he has failed and the amount of effort he makes does not qualify him to continue holding the post. People ought to be measured by their achievements and not by their failures.
Mr. Patterson, in the interest of Jamaica and the People's National Party, give Dr. Davies a rest because he must by now be a very tired man whose intellect has long reached saturation point. He gave of his best and no one should expect more.
Why not invite Mr. Lattibeaudiere to take his place and reward Dr. Davies with an ambassadorial post.
I am, etc.,
OWEN S. CROSBIE
