THE EDITOR, Sir:
I NOTE with interest Patrick Roberts' request for the Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) to oversee the election of officers for the new JFF administration on November 23, 2003.
We welcome this move because we believe that such a gesture would help to promote transparency in the operations of the JFF which would help to foster public confidence which is flagging at this time.
I trust Captain Burrell will take this suggestion seriously. The best thing this current administration can do to inspire confidence is to let the light shine through; any resistance to Roberts' suggestion must be seen as an indication that there is something to hide.
Many organisations including the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), have employed the services of the EOJ to conduct their internal elections. The EOJ seal of approval would remove any taint of dishonesty and would streng-then the legitimacy of whoever is elected. Let us not allow short-term interest to trump long-term objectives.
I am, etc.,
