'Get outside help!'
published: Wednesday | October 29, 2003

THE JAMAICA Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA) has charged that the Police Force is not competent to deal with the country's crime problems and is urging the Government to seek external help in fighting the monster.

"It is clear to all of us, as it must now be to the entire nation, that Jamaica's Police Force, as currently constituted, cannot cope with the level of crime and violence in Jamaica," said Godfrey Dyer, president of the JHTA at a press conference yesterday at the Courtleigh Hotel, New Kingston.

Mr. Dyer, who was speaking against the background of events in Flankers, St. James, which resulted in two elderly men being shot and killed by the police on Saturday, said the Police Force lacks the requisite intelligence gathering capabilities and public trust necessary to properly combat crime.

"We need outside help. We need more experts in intelligence gathering. We need help in police operations," Mr. Dyer stressed. "We need a local Police Force that engenders confidence and respect from the citizens of this country."
