McKenzie vows to bring back order
published: Sunday | June 29, 2003

McKenzie

DESMOND MCKENZIE, who is tipped to be next Mayor of Kingston has vowed to use the office to bring back order to the capital city.

"My number one priority is to try and return some semblance of discipline and authority to the city," he told The Sunday Gleaner in an interview last Friday.

Among the issues he intends to tackle are street vending, a crackdown on illegal construction across the city and getting more cooperation between the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation (KSAC), the private sector and other social interest groups.

"I know we will be paying special attention to the question of the illegal buildings that are taking place in the district," said Senator McKenzie. "The city is being overrun by a lot of illegal construction that does not comply with the safety regulations. Buildings are going up over five, six floors and the city doesn't have the capacity to fight fires above a certain level."

He charged that the previous KSAC administration failed to deal effectively with the issue of street vending and he hoped to see a "working solution" effected during his tenure as mayor.
