Sachin set to top them
published: Tuesday | March 18, 2003

CAPE TOWN, (AP):

INDIAN BATSMAN Sachin Tendulkar will clinch the player of the World Cup honours with a match to spare if he produces another man-of-the-match performance in the semifinal against Kenya.

Tendulkar, the tournament's leading runscorer, has been man-of-the match in three of India's nine games so far - worth three points each - and has 12 points in all, four clear of Sri Lankans Marvan Atapattu and Chaminda Vaas.

Tendulkar earned full points for his innings against Zimbabwe (81), Namibia (152) and Pakistan (98), as well as two points for his 97 against Sri Lanka and one for a half century against Netherlands.

With only three matches remaining, the only players apart from Atapattu and Vaas who can overhaul Tendulkar are India captain Sourav Ganguly and Sri Lanka captain Sanath Jayasuriya, who have seven and six points respectively.

The match referee awards points to the three best players in each match.

Standings: Sachin Tendulkar 12; Marvan Atapattu 8 and Chaminda Vaas 8; Sourav Ganguly 7; Wasim Akram (Pakistan), James Anderson (England), John Davison (Canada) and Sanath Jayasuirya 6.
