Reading competition for April
published: Wednesday | February 26, 2003

GINGER RIDGE, St. Catherine:

MEMBERS OF the Western St. Catherine Principal's Association have decided to celebrate Education Week, which is from May 4-10 this year, by holding their annual reading competition during the first week of April.

During a Principal's Association meeting held at the Friendship Primary near Fairfield Road in Spanish Town on Thursday, the group of educators took the decision to hold the annual reading competition to mark the occasion.

President of the Association, Ruby Gibbs, of the Kitson Town All-Age School, said that holding the competition at that time is a fitting way of recognising students during Education Week. According to her, National Commercial Bank (NCB) sponsored the event last year and the Association will be asking NCB to do so again this year. Students who excelled in the competition are awarded each year for first, second and third places. A champion male and female student reader from the cluster is named each year.

Education officer for the area, Yvette Dennis, speaking at the same meeting, endorsed the competition and said that it will provide incentives for students to read well.
