Belnavis to run in local gov't elections
published: Wednesday | February 26, 2003

FORMER JAMAICA Labour Party candidate/caretaker for North East St. Ann, Ocho Rios businessman, Michael Belnavis, is to return to active representational politics, as the party's candidate for the Boscobel division of St. Mary, in the upcoming Local Government elections.

Belnavis was unanimously selected on Sunday afternoon, at a mass party divisional regional conference at the Gayle Primary School.

Political pundits see Belnavis' selection as another major JLP effort to get high-profile candidates on their tickets for the parochial poll.

Belnavis, a former member of both the JLP Central Executive and Standing Committee, unsuccessfully contested the 1997 general elections for the JLP in North East St. Ann. He resigned in 2000, as caretaker for the constituency.

In 1995, Belnavis, 40, served as chairman of the JLP's Young Leaders Council the forerunner to the party's current G2K young executives group.
