THE NATIONAL Workers Union (NWU) says that the death of Abijah Buchanan, chairman of the All-Island Cane Farmers Association (AIJCFA) was a 'massive loss', not only to the cane farming sector, but also to the nation on a whole.
"Abijah Buchanan was an outstanding cane farmer and a patriotic and great Jamaican. The cane farming sector has lost an icon, the industry has lost a friend, the trade union movement has lost a platform which was always reliable, encouraging and above all, sober, intelligent and honest," said the release signed by island supervisor Vincent Morrison.
"In his capacity as chairman of the cane farming sector, he always ensured that the labour/ management negotiations, between the Association and the unions (NWU/BITU), took only two meetings to be completed. This explains the businesslike and no nonsense approach of Abijah Buchanan, truly an outstanding human being.
"The NWU wish to extend condolences to his family, friends, well wishers and members of the cane farming fraternity whom he served diligently and well for over forty years," the release said.
