THE EDITOR, Sir:
ON BEHALF of the Sisters of Mercy of Jamaica I would like to express our gratitude for the many beautiful and heartfelt expressions of sympathy and appreciation for the life of Sister Mary Ignatius from so many persons here in Jamaica and indeed, all over the world. The past students of Alpha Boys' School have been most noteworthy in their praise and thankfulness.
Additionally I would like to single out the media for their coverage of the innumerable tributes and the touching articles and photographs which have been published.
During her life Sister Mary Ignatius always chose to put herself in the background, and so this phenomenal outpouring of commendation in her honour is ironic, though not really surprising. Like a candle whose fragrance is most noticeable after it has been extinguished, Sr. Mary Ignatius' quiet love for so many and her beautiful life of total dedication are now being acknowledged by those of us who had the privilege of knowing her. What a difference one single life can make!
Our hope is that some young Jamaican women will be inspired by her selfless service and her incarnation of God's mercy to the less fortunate, and that they will follow in her footsteps.
We miss her in a profound way, but the void created by her absence only serves to remind us of her love that lives on in our hearts. May she rest in peace and enjoy her eternal reward.
I am etc.,
