THE EDITOR, Sir:
MY STOMACH churns whenever I see some of the advertisements on our local television stations. I wonder why is it that at this time when domestic violence is recognised as a problem in Jamaica (and throughout the world for that matter) there are advertisements that are literally promoting domestic violence.
Two such television advertisements are : "singer" (where the wife beats her husband and locks him out of the house) and that of "true juice" (where the lady slaps her man in the face and he said "but she neva did have fi slap mi"). What a wimp.
Are we saying that it is okay for a woman to commit domestic violence against a man, even though we say that domestic violence as a whole is wrong?
Hitting is wrong , whether by man or by the woman. So we need to stop promoting the wrong things especially at this time when we are saying that we are trying to teach our children good values and attitudes. These advertisements could have shown the lady just quarrelling with the man, pouting at him and then end it right there. She could even pack her bag and walk out on him. What is it? can't we solve problems anymore without getting physical?
Both the media and the advertising companies should be ashamed of themselves for promoting such disgraceful behaviour.
I am etc.,
