Seba look to shine again
published: Sunday | January 5, 2003

Whitmore... uncertain

Paul A. Reid, Staff Reporter

WESTERN BUREAU:

A REJUVENATED Seba United will continue their quest for a place in the end of second round finals this afternoon when they take on bottom club Bull Bay at Jarrett Park, starting at 6:00.

A 2-0 away win over Tivoli Gardens last Sunday carried the Montego Bay team into fourth place in the second round points standings on 12 points, just four out of second place with the two teams immediately ahead of them, facing tough opponents today.

Second placed Harbour View- 16 points hosts Tivoli Gardens seeking to rebound while third placed Waterhouse-13 hosts a resurgent Reno at Emmett Park.

Seba United could be without some influential players for the second week as they are all nursing injuries and coach Danilo Bariga told the Gleaner on Friday he was awaiting word from the team doctor on the availability of Theodore Whitmore, Nicardo Folkes, Kevon Grant and Markino Gillings.

Depending on who will be available, the little Peruvian said he would arrive at a final starting team and the formation. The former head coach of the Haitian women's team said he liked to use a modified 5-3-2 formation that saw the five defenders playing in a diamond formation with a free player, 19 year-old Rohan Bernard linking the defence and the midfield.

With the injuries and the talent of his last opponents, he said he was forced to use the 4-5-1 formation which worked well against the Tivoli team that he described as "an excellent team, good attacking with a number of national players".

The Geoffrey Maxwell coached team, he said, was the only one that allowed them to play good football over the last four rounds he said as others came with a defence first mentality.

Should Bull Bay come playing not to lose today, he would not be surprised as three of the last four teams employed the same tactics. Bariga said he was expecting Bull Bay to start defensively and hope for a goal on the counter attack then sit back to defend it.

Denton Vidal and Wilfred Smith who have both managed to dodge the injury bug, combined well against Tivoli while Damion Williams, Iton Scott and Michael Thompson could also feature in the Seba attack against the Bull Bay team that has given up 37 goals, 18 so far through seven games in the second round.

Wadadah have given up a league high 45 while using four different goalkeepers while Rivoli have conceded 36.

Bull Bay who were promoted at the start of the season, have not won since edging Waterhouse 1-0 on November 10, seven matches ago and player/coach Barrington Gaynor said the team needed to turn around their fortunes now.
